I love cruising. My family and I have enjoyed several cruise vacations to destinations such as Mexico, Alaska, and Hawaii (my favourite!). It’s a great way to see places you may not otherwise travel to and get a taste of destinations you may want to return to later for a longer holiday. If you’re an experienced cruiser, you know the value for your money you’ll enjoy; but if you’re new to cruising, it’s good to know why they’re a popular travel option and what sets them apart from destination vacations.

Here are some of my favourite things about crusing and some tips for those new to this style of travel:

They’re Stress Free & Fun

Once you’ve reached your point of departure and checked- in on the boat, all you have to do is scope out your state room and take a tour of the ship. Your luggage is delivered to your stateroom for you to unpack once you’re settled. It’s a good idea to check out what is offered on your particular vessel in terms of dining options so you know where to go for an early morning coffee or late night snack.

Tip: Make sure you keep your cruise card handy for on board purchases (these also serve as your stateroom key- so try not to lose them!). This is the only thing you need to carry with you when onboard.

There’s Something for Everyone

Once asail, you can select from a variety of onboard activities to enjoy at sea and plan what you want to do at the various ports of call. A major bonus for families is the onboard programs for kids of various ages, so Mom and Dad can enjoy some important R&R time. Most cruises offer everything from nightly shows (usually a selection of theatre-style programs and guest entertainers ranging from comedians to magicians, to name a few) to interactive activities, and guest entertainers. You’ll always have plenty to choose from.

Tip: Book activities for ports of call in advance at home, rather than waiting to book them on the ship, as they may sell out. Speak with your travel agent about what options will be available on your cruise and special considerations (ie age minimum, physical activity involved, etc). Added bonus: the activities booked through the ship are a safe and secure way for your family to explore ports of call and make sure you get back to the ship on time!

They’ll Stretch Your Vacation Budget

Cruises are an amazing bang for your buck. If you average out the cost of your cruise, including food and entertainment, you’ll be hard pressed to find a hotel vacation that offers up the same variety at the same price point. Where else could you enjoy a variety of dining options (from buffet- style to fine- dining) and entertainment, all within a convenient walking distance from your room? Some of my favourite vacation memories are those from cruise vacations- including a helicopter glacier tour in Alaska and seeing an active volcano erupt in Hawaii- you’ll never forget experiences like these!

Tip: Enjoy strolling your floating hotel and checking out the onboard amenities such as spa, pool(s), casino, and entertainment options when you embark so you know where everything is (some ships are easier to navigate than others). If you’re curious about trying out cruising for your next vacation or are thinking about your next cruise vacation, speak to a travel agent to help you choose a cruiseline and destination that’s right for your family. Choose from informal and fun or structured and kid- free (or something in between). You really can’t go wrong with a cruise vacation!
